This Redford ‘Helicopter’ dining table by E. Gomme has a striking base that looks different from every angle. The splayed supports meet in shaped central joints and are joined by a long stretcher, giving the table its distinctive profile and the nickname it has acquired over the years.
Above the base, the rectangular top has gently rounded corners, a shaped solid wood edge and warm grain across the surface. It offers generous room for dining while keeping a clean, simple outline. The sculptural legs are the main event, but the table remains an easy piece to use every day and to pair with a wide range of chairs.
The Redford range is part of the story of British mid century furniture. It was made by E. Gomme, the High Wycombe manufacturer that went on to launch G-Plan in 1953. A Redford Suite catalogue survives from 1952, placing the range at an interesting point just before the G-Plan name appeared. This table retains its original E. Gomme maker’s stamp underneath.
The table has been carefully restored in our workshop, with attention paid to bringing out the warmth of the wood and making it ready for its next home. It is in fantastic vintage condition, with only minor signs of age and use appropriate to a piece from the 1950s.
A particularly good choice if you want a dining table with a strong shape and a genuine connection to the early years of British mid century design.
