Bätzner Architectural Office was commissioned by Wilhelm Bofinger to create additional seating for the State Theatre in Karlsruhe. The chair needed to be light, stackable, linkable, movable, comfortable, and weatherproof. Using a compression mould, the chair could be produced in just five minutes. The fibreglass-reinforced polyester resin was dyed throughout, while the distinctive folded structure of the legs provided stability without additional reinforcement.

Looking at these stacked examples in vivid red, yellow, and blue, the stackability is clearly fundamental to the form itself. Manufactured from 1966 through 1984, the Bofinger chair proved that plastic furniture could be both practical and permanent – ground zero for everything that came after in modern seating design.

Using standard tools, the components could be fabricated without specialised equipment.

The form is wonderfully sculptural, with sweeping curved arms that demonstrate Breuer’s mastery of plywood’s flexibility. The original sprung under-upholstery remains, though the tartan cover is a replacement. This chair represents a moment when avant-garde design principles were being translated into pieces that could realistically furnish a modern apartment, not just populate exhibition spaces.

These storage units bridged bespoke cabinetry and mass production, offering custom-quality flexibility within a system that could be manufactured at scale.

The two hinged sections fold down without disturbing drawer contents – a crucial detail making the transformation practical rather than purely conceptual.

Made from solid beech and beech veneer on MDF, this piece demonstrates how traditional British craftsmanship can serve contemporary, cross-cultural design. There’s no mechanical complexity or clever hinges that could fail – just straightforward construction offering genuine flexibility. It’s furniture that adapts to how you actually live.

Thirteen sheets of birch veneer were stacked with perpendicular grain orientation. Cuts were made for arms and back legs before pressing. Glue was spread between layers, then the entire stack was pressed in a two-part wooden mould for eight hours. Once moulded, the front legs were cut from the fully formed board.

What emerges is a chair flowing in continuous curves from seat to back to arms to legs, with only strategic cuts creating necessary openings. It’s remarkably economical – no joints to fail, no separate components. The fact that this dates to 1934 makes it all the more remarkable, years before the Eameses would perfect their moulded plywood techniques.

Within wooden moulds, stacks of thin, glued veneers were pressed between an inflatable rubber bag and metal – a technique refined during wartime work creating moulded plywood leg splints for the US Navy. The seat is five-ply birch, the back another five-ply, and the frame uses seven plies. Each component is moulded separately, then assembled using rubber shock mounts and steel fittings that provide flex while maintaining integrity.

The LCW reconciles industrial production with human-centered design. The seat and back are shaped to support the body naturally, with intuitive curves. When Time magazine called it “the chair of the century” in 1999, they weren’t wrong. It proved that mass production and thoughtful design weren’t mutually exclusive.

The translucent smoked acrylic adds visual lightness, creating negative space that feels as important as solid form.

For a small British manufacturer like William J. Cox, this technique made producing contemporary design commercially viable without specialised equipment – just heat, pressure, and skilled hands. It’s democratic manufacturing in the truest sense.

One or two lengths of tubular steel were bent into shape on a workshop jig, one bend at a time, then joined using internal metal sleeves. That distinctive cantilever form creates a sprung seat through the material’s inherent flex. The seven-ply birch plywood seat and back provide just enough give while maintaining minimalist aesthetics. This wasn’t furniture rolling off assembly lines – it required skilled metalworkers who understood how tubular steel behaved, bridging industrial ideals with craft realities.

Strands of fibreglass and adhesive were moulded to create the shell’s form, then molten resin was impregnated into the fibreglass within the same mould, creating a unified composite that was lightweight and incredibly strong. That distinctive organically-shaped shell with integrated arms cradles the body naturally.

The genius lies in modularity. That shell could be mounted on various bases – dowel legs here (hence “DAW” for Dining Armchair Wood), or wire bases, rockers, or office mechanisms. The rubber shock absorbers between shell and base provide just enough give for comfort. The DAW achieved what the Eameses had worked toward for years: furniture that was affordable, comfortable, beautiful, and truly mass-producible.

The form is wonderfully direct. Those wide, paddle-like legs make no attempt to disguise what they are – flat plywood sheets doing exactly what’s needed. The geometry is almost childlike in its simplicity, yet there’s real sophistication in how components relate, in the angles and proportions making the chair both stable and stackable. It’s furniture that openly declares its construction method.

Here’s a chair that plays a clever trick. That glossy, vibrant orange surface screams injection-moulded plastic – exactly what you’d expect from 1960s Kartell. Except it’s not plastic at all. Colombo created this entire sculptural form from bent plywood, then finished it with sprayed pigmented polyester varnish to achieve that seamless, plastic-like appearance.

The V&A calls this “a witty reversal of general practice.” By 1963, plastic was actively replacing wood for mass-produced seating. So why would Colombo go the other direction? Perhaps commentary on materials fetishism, or recognition that bent plywood could achieve forms injection moulding couldn’t yet replicate at reasonable cost.

The form is pure sculptural confidence – bold cutouts creating negative space, arms flowing into the back in continuous ribbons, dynamic angles making the chair look in motion while static. Colombo died tragically young at 41, but produced some of the most innovative furniture of the 1960s. This chair captures everything that made his work distinctive.

Conclusion: Design That Endures

Walking through the V&A’s furniture collection reinforces something I see daily in the vintage furniture trade: truly great design transcends its moment. These aren’t museum pieces because they’re old – they’re here because they solved problems in ways that fundamentally changed how furniture could be made, used, and understood.

What strikes me most is the relationship between materials innovation and design evolution. From Summers’ single-piece plywood experiments in 1934 to Panton’s plastic cantilever realised in 1968, each piece represents designers pushing materials to their absolute limits – and sometimes beyond what was technically possible at the time.

There’s also something instructive about how many of these “mass-produced” pieces actually required significant handcraft. The ST14’s hand-bent tubes, the Bofinger’s careful moulding, Gray’s expert joinery – the line between industrial and craft production was far blurrier than modernist rhetoric suggested. The best designers understood that new materials and manufacturing methods didn’t eliminate the need for expertise; they just redirected it.

For anyone working with vintage furniture today, understanding these pieces’ technical and historical context matters. When you’re restoring a mid-century chair or advising a client on a purchase, knowing whether something represents a genuine design innovation or just rode the coattails of someone else’s breakthrough helps you spot quality and authenticity.
