Dirk van Sliedrecht

Dirk van Sliedrecht (1920-2010) was a pioneering Dutch furniture designer who became synonymous with elegant rattan and bamboo furniture in the post-war period. Working primarily with manufacturers Rohé Noordwolde and Gebroeders Jonkers, Van Sliedrecht created pieces that balanced modernist principles with traditional Dutch craftsmanship and natural materials. His designs show the influence of Danish designer Kaare Klint in their functional simplicity and careful proportions. Beyond his design work, Van Sliedrecht was a dedicated educator who shaped Dutch design education as professor and director at several academies including Kampen, Enschede, and Amsterdam. His furniture represents a distinctly Dutch approach to mid-century modernism – one that valued natural materials, honest construction, and timeless functionality over fleeting trends.
