Hilleplan Furniture

Hilleplan is a range of British mid century storage furniture designed by Robin Day for Hille during the early 1950s.

Developed as a flexible, standardised furniture system, Hilleplan included cabinets, bookcases, bureaux, sideboards and other storage pieces that could be used individually or grouped together. The range followed Day’s early experiments with adaptable storage and reflected his belief that well-designed furniture should be practical, economical and suitable for modern homes.

Hilleplan pieces typically feature clean, uncomplicated forms, tapered legs and carefully selected contrasting timbers. Different versions were produced using woods including beech, cherry, walnut and other veneers, giving the furniture a warm appearance while retaining the restrained styling characteristic of Robin Day’s early work.

Produced by Hille from the 1950s, surviving Hilleplan furniture is increasingly sought after as an important example of post-war British modernist design.
