Model No. 1227

The Anglepoise 1227 is the lamp most people picture when they think “Anglepoise” – and for good reason. George Carwardine’s three-spring balanced design from 1934 is still one of the best task lights ever made. These are original Herbert Terry & Sons lamps from Redditch, spanning from early production through to the 1980s.

Each 1227 here has been professionally restored in our Devon workshop. We rewire every lamp to current safety standards using period-appropriate fabric flex, check and service the spring mechanism (replacing springs only when the originals are genuinely worn out), and clean the metalwork without obliterating the patina that gives these lamps their character.

What makes a real 1227:

The three-spring constant tension mechanism that lets you position the lamp precisely and have it stay there – no drooping after five minutes. Herbert Terry & Sons made these properly, which is why so many are still working 50, 60, 70 years later.

You’ll see variation across our 1227s because the design evolved over decades. Early stepped bases versus later weighted bases. Deeper original shades from the 1930s-50s versus the slightly shallower profiles from the 1960s onward. Different switch positions and cable entry points depending on era. We can help you date any lamp using these markers – shade profile, base style, spring caps, and stampings all tell the story.

We’re honest about condition and restoration. If springs have been replaced, if a shade has been refinished, if there’s wear or patina worth noting – we’ll tell you. These lamps were made for draughtsmen, architects, and designers who needed precision task lighting. They’re just as good for that today: desks, workbenches, reading chairs, anywhere you need directional light that actually works.

These aren’t modern Anglepoise reproductions or offshore copies. They’re the original British-made Herbert Terry & Sons lamps, sourced from house clearances and workshops across the UK, restored to working condition while keeping their vintage character intact.
