Vintage plant stands from the 1950s through to the 1980s – when people actually displayed their houseplants properly rather than just plonking them on any available surface. We source mid-century plant stands in various styles, from tiered corner units to simple single pot holders, in materials from teak to beech to metal frames.
Each stand has been professionally restored here in Devon. Wood stands get hand sanded to remove water marks and decades of soil stains, then refinished with Danish oil. Metal frames are cleaned and checked for stability. We replace any worn feet or damaged supports – these need to be solid when you’re trusting them with your plants.
You’ll find different designs here depending on how people displayed plants back then. Tiered stands that let you show off multiple plants at different heights. Single pot holders designed to elevate one statement plant. Corner stands that made use of awkward spaces. Floor-standing pieces and smaller tabletop versions. Some in warm teak, others in lighter beech or walnut, a few with metal frames and wooden shelves.
What we look for:
Stability – these hold plants, often with water-filled saucers, so they need proper weight distribution and solid construction. Wood quality that shows decent timber rather than cheap veneer over chipboard. Well-designed drainage considerations – the good ones have raised edges or recessed areas that stop water damaging the wood. Joinery that’s held up through years of moisture exposure.
We’re transparent about condition. Plant stands often show water damage – darkened wood, ring marks, slight warping – and we’re honest about what we can restore and what becomes part of the piece’s character. If a shelf has been replaced, if feet are new, if there’s permanent staining – you’ll know.
These come from house clearances and sales across Southwest England. They’ve held spider plants in 1970s living rooms, cheese plants in 1960s hallways, decades of houseplant trends. Properly cared for (use saucers, wipe up spills), they’ll do the same job for years to come.
