Space Age Lamp

Vintage Space Age lamps from the late 1960s through the 1970s – when lighting design embraced futuristic forms, new materials, and the optimism of the space race. Pod shapes, chrome arcs, moulded plastic globes, and organic forms that looked like they belonged on spacecraft rather than in suburban living rooms. These aren’t traditional table lamps; they’re sculptural statements that defined an era’s vision of the future.

Each lamp here has been professionally restored in our Devon workshop. All lighting is completely rewired to current UK safety standards with new cable, appropriate fittings, and proper earth connections where needed. Moulded plastics are cleaned carefully – these materials can be brittle after 50+ years. Chrome is polished and assessed for pitting. Glass shades are checked for cracks or chips. Mechanisms (adjustable arms, swivel bases, dimmer switches) are serviced and tested.

What defines Space Age lamps:

The influence of the space race and futuristic design on everyday lighting. Organic, sculptural forms – mushroom shapes, globe spheres, arc designs, pod-like structures. Materials that felt modern in the 1960s-70s: moulded plastics (ABS, acrylic), chrome-plated steel, fibreglass, smoked glass, aluminium. Colours from stark white to vibrant orange, red, or yellow, often combined with chrome or metallic finishes.

Designers like Verner Panton, Joe Colombo, Gae Aulenti, and Harvey Guzzini pushing what lamps could look like when freed from traditional forms. Italian manufacturers particularly dominated Space Age lighting – companies like Guzzini, Artemide, Stilnovo, and countless smaller workshops producing innovative designs.

Common forms and types:

Mushroom lamps with domed shades on cylindrical bases – iconic 1970s form in moulded plastic or glass, often with integrated switches. Table lamps with spherical or globe shades in chrome and plastic. Arc floor lamps with sweeping chrome arms and adjustable heads. Desk lamps with articulated arms in painted metal or chrome.

Pendant-style table lamps where the shade hangs from an arched support. Cylinder lamps in moulded plastic – entire lamp formed from one piece. Eyeball lamps with directional spherical shades on adjustable joints. Clamp lamps with futuristic forms attaching to shelves or tables.

The aesthetic is deliberately non-traditional – these rejected conventional lamp forms in favour of sculptural, often asymmetric designs that worked as objects even when switched off.

Materials and construction:

Moulded plastics dominate Space Age lamps – ABS (harder, more durable), acrylic (used for translucent effects), fibreglass (for larger structural pieces). Chrome-plated steel for frames, arms, and bases – quality varies significantly between manufacturers. Aluminium for lighter components. Glass – clear, smoked, or coloured – for shades and diffusers.

Italian manufacturers generally showed better construction quality: substantial chrome plating, well-designed moulded components, proper electrical fittings. Northern European makers brought cleaner, more minimal forms. British Space Age lamps exist but are less common than Italian or Scandinavian examples.

Construction methods differ from traditional lamps. Many Space Age lamps are moulded single pieces or assemblies using modern manufacturing techniques – injection moulding, vacuum forming, metal spinning. Quality shows in finishing: smooth moulding without flash marks, even chrome plating, well-designed joints and connections.

Designers and manufacturers:

Italian names dominate: Harvey Guzzini (and the broader Guzzini family of designers), Vico Magistretti, Gae Aulenti, Joe Colombo. Manufacturers like Artemide, Stilnovo, Kartell, iGuzzini produced designs by these and other designers.

Verner Panton from Denmark created distinctive plastic lamps alongside his famous furniture. German manufacturers like Staff and Doria produced quality Space Age lighting. British makers were less prominent but produced some interesting designs.

Some lamps are by documented designers with clear attribution. Many are anonymous workshop pieces showing similar design ambition and manufacturing quality without celebrity names attached.

Authentication and identification:

Better Space Age lamps have manufacturer marks, designer signatures, or moulded labels – typically on bases or inside shades. Look for “Made in Italy,” “Guzzini,” “Artemide,” or specific designer names. Many don’t retain labels after 50 years of use.

We identify from construction quality, material characteristics, design details, and manufacturing techniques. Italian lamps typically show better finishing and material quality than cheaper copies. Chrome plating thickness and quality, plastic moulding precision, electrical component design all help with identification.

There are plenty of modern reproductions of famous Space Age lamps – Panton designs particularly. Differences show in materials (modern plastic versus vintage), weight, manufacturing details, and aging patterns that can’t be faked.

Condition considerations:

Plastics from this era age in specific ways. Brittleness develops – what flexed when new becomes rigid and prone to cracking. Hairline cracks appear, particularly at stress points like where shades meet bases or around screw holes. Surface crazing (fine cracks in surface finish) is common.

UV exposure causes colour changes – whites yellow, colours fade or shift tone. Orange can become peachy, red can dull. Surface scratches accumulate from decades of handling and cleaning. Some plastics develop a chalky surface bloom.

Chrome plating from the 1960s-70s often shows pitting, particularly on pieces stored in damp conditions. Paint on metal components can chip or flake. Glass shades develop scratches, chips at edges, or stress cracks around mounting points.

We’re transparent about all condition issues. If there are cracks in plastic (hairline or structural), if chrome is pitted, if colours have shifted, if glass is chipped, if there are repairs – you’ll know. Some aging is expected and adds character; damage affecting function or safety gets properly addressed or clearly noted.

Rewiring requirements:

Every Space Age lamp gets completely rewired regardless of original condition. 1960s-70s Italian and European electrical components don’t meet current UK safety standards. Cable insulation degrades over decades. Original switches often use designs no longer considered safe.

We use period-appropriate cable where visible – twisted flex, braided cable in colours that suit the lamp’s design. Modern cable goes where it’s hidden. All earthing is properly done where required. Switches are replaced with safe modern equivalents that maintain period aesthetics where possible.

Lampholders get checked or replaced. Dimmer switches (common on Italian lamps) are replaced with modern equivalents. Everything is tested before being ready for use.

Bulb requirements and light quality:

Many Space Age lamps need specific bulb types to look right and function safely. Mushroom lamps often need globe bulbs. Directional lamps work with spot or reflector bulbs. Some designs require specific wattages to avoid heat damage to plastic shades.

We advise on appropriate LED equivalents. The translucent plastics and coloured shades in many Space Age lamps mean bulb colour temperature matters – warm LEDs generally work better than cool whites for maintaining intended atmosphere.

Some Space Age lamps were designed for ambient lighting rather than task lighting – they create atmosphere and visual interest but won’t illuminate rooms brightly. Consider them as accent lighting adding character rather than primary light sources.

Makers and origins:

Italian lamps – the majority of quality Space Age lighting came from Italy. Guzzini family designers (Harvey Guzzini, Alvino Bagni, Luigi Massoni) created distinctive moulded plastic lamps. Artemide and Stilnovo produced designs by major names. Quality Italian manufacturing shows in finishing, materials, and construction.
Scandinavian designs – cleaner, more minimal forms than Italian equivalents. Verner Panton’s work, plus Danish and Swedish manufacturers producing quality lighting with Space Age influences.
German lamps – companies like Staff and Doria made substantial quality lamps, often in chrome and glass combinations. More restrained than Italian exuberance but well-made.

British examples – less common than European production but occasionally interesting designs from smaller manufacturers.

Colour palettes:

White and chrome – the classic Space Age combination suggesting cleanliness and technology. Orange – perhaps the most characteristic 1970s Space Age colour. Red, yellow, and bright colours reflecting optimism and boldness. Smoked glass and metallic finishes. Earth tones appearing in later 1970s designs.

The best Space Age lamps use colour boldly – these weren’t trying to blend into neutral backgrounds but to make statements and define room character.
