Vintage Bench

Proper vintage benches from the 1950s through to the 1980s – the kind you can actually use rather than worry about. We source mid-century benches from makers like Ercol, G-Plan, and Scandinavian manufacturers who built furniture to last generations, not just look good in a showroom.

Each bench has been professionally restored here in Devon using traditional methods. That means hand sanding to remove decades of wear, Danish oil finishing on teak and elm frames, and keeping original upholstery wherever it’s still sound. When we do reupholster, we’re transparent about it – you’ll know what’s original and what’s been replaced.

You’ll find hall benches, dining benches, window seat benches, and telephone benches here – different designs for different uses, all built with the solid joinery that defines mid-century furniture. Materials vary from warm teak to lighter beech, solid elm to oak, depending on the maker and era. Some have storage underneath, some are simple slatted designs, others feature upholstered seats with wooden frames.

What we look for:

Solid construction – proper mortise and tenon joints, not screws and glue. Original maker’s stamps or labels when they’re still present (many aren’t after 50+ years, which is fine). Wood quality that shows these were made from decent timber, not cheap offcuts. Design details that place them firmly in their period.

We’re honest about condition. If a slat has been replaced, if there’s a repair to a leg, if upholstery is new rather than original – we’ll tell you. Authentication matters too, particularly with popular makers like Ercol where you see plenty of “in the style of” pieces that aren’t the genuine article.

These benches come from house clearances, auctions, and sales across Southwest England. They’ve had full lives – in hallways, at dining tables, under windows – and they’re ready for decades more. No chipboard, no flatpack assembly, no planned obsolescence. Just well-made vintage furniture restored to working condition.
