Wall Shelves

Vintage wall shelving from the 1950s through to the 1980s – modular systems, floating shelves, and bracket-mounted units that were designed to be adaptable rather than fixed. We source mid-century wall shelves from makers like String, Ladderax, Ercol, and Scandinavian manufacturers who understood that people’s storage needs change over time.

Each set has been professionally restored here in Devon. That means hand sanding shelves to remove decades of marks and stains, Danish oil finishing on teak and walnut, checking bracket integrity, and replacing fixings with modern equivalents that’ll actually hold in today’s plasterboard walls. Original metal brackets get cleaned and checked – we only replace them if they’re genuinely beyond saving.

What makes good vintage shelving:

Solid wood construction, not veneered chipboard pretending to be teak. Original brackets and wall fixings that show proper engineering rather than cheap stamped metal. Adjustable systems where the mechanism still works smoothly after 50+ years. Finish quality that tells you these were made by furniture manufacturers, not knocked out in a garden shed.

We’re transparent about what’s original and what’s been replaced. If brackets are reproductions, if shelves have been refinished, if fixings are modern – you’ll know. Some systems come complete with all their original parts, others are individual shelves or sections that can work standalone or be added to existing setups.

Authentication matters, particularly with systems like String where there are plenty of lookalikes. We know the difference between genuine Nisse Strinning shelving and later copies, between original Ladderax components and modern reproductions. Maker’s stamps, construction methods, bracket design, wood quality – they all tell the story.

These come from house clearances and sales across Southwest England. They’ve held books, records, plants, and decades of everyday life. Properly installed (and we can advise on fixings for different wall types), they’ll do the same for decades more.
