A beautiful mid century chest of drawers from G-Plan's highly sought-after China White range, designed and manufactured in Britain during the late 1950s.
One of G-Plan's most distinctive early collections, the China White range perfectly captures the optimism of post-war British design. The lovely contrast between the crisp white lacquered drawer fronts and the warm blonde oak frame gives the piece a wonderfully fresh, contemporary feel that remains every bit as stylish today as it was over sixty years ago.
Offering generous storage, the chest features three spacious drawers, each fitted with elegant solid brass pull handles that beautifully complement the warmth of the oak. The top drawer is thoughtfully divided into three compartments, making it ideal for organising smaller items such as clothing, accessories or everyday essentials. Beneath, the signature ebonised plinth and tapered legs with brass-capped feet create a striking visual contrast, giving the piece its unmistakable mid century character.
Introduced by E. Gomme in the 1950s, the China White range showcased G-Plan’s forward-thinking approach to furniture design, blending clean Scandinavian-inspired lines with exceptional British craftsmanship. Produced in relatively small numbers compared with later collections, surviving examples have become increasingly desirable among collectors and lovers of authentic mid century furniture.
This chest has been professionally refinished and is presented in excellent vintage condition. The oak has been carefully restored to highlight its beautiful natural grain, while the white drawer fronts provide a crisp, clean contrast that perfectly complements the original design. The G-Plan maker’s stamp remains present inside the drawer.
A superb statement piece that combines iconic mid century styling with practical everyday storage, equally at home in a bedroom, living space or hallway.
Presented in excellent refinished vintage condition with only very light signs of age and use, consistent with its history. A beautifully restored example of one of G-Plan’s most desirable early designs.

G-Plan revolutionised British furniture when E. Gomme Ltd launched the range in 1953, making contemporary design accessible to post-war families. Created by Donald Gomme in response to the success of the Festival of Britain, G-Plan offered coordinated modern furniture that could be purchased piece by piece, allowing people to build stylish interiors gradually according to their budget.
The brand’s success lay in combining sophisticated design with practical manufacturing, featuring clean lines, quality craftsmanship, and beautiful teak and rosewood veneers. From the light oak Brandon range of the 1950s to the sculptural Fresco collection of the late 1960s, G-Plan defined mid-century British style and became one of the UK’s largest furniture manufacturers, with pieces remaining highly sought after by collectors today.
