Stag was a British furniture manufacturer known for solid wood furniture in oak and teak. Their pieces often feature more traditional English styling compared to Danish-influenced contemporary designs.
The Minstrel range in dark mahogany is particularly recognizable, alongside lighter oak and teak ranges. Quality construction with dovetail drawers, turned legs, and brass hardware.
We stock Stag sideboards, desks, and storage furniture, all properly restored and ready to use.

John and Sylvia Reid were a British design couple who transformed post-war furniture through their decade-long partnership with Stag Furniture from 1952 to 1962. Both trained architects who had worked with influential designer Robin Day and manufacturer Hille, they brought architectural principles to furniture design, creating pieces that emphasized clean lines, functionality, and affordability for a younger generation emerging from wartime austerity. Their breakthrough came with the Cumberland ‘C’ Range in 1953, which featured innovative recessed hand-grip handles instead of traditional hardware and blonde oak veneer over mahogany – a stark departure from reproduction furniture that initially struggled commercially but eventually earned over £500,000 annually by 1957.
The Reids’ work encompassed multiple ranges for Stag, from the modernist C Range and the refined S Range (1960-63) with its distinctive teak and stainless steel construction, to the commercially successful Minstrel Range in a more traditional style. Drawing inspiration from Scandinavian design while maintaining a distinctly British sensibility, they helped establish mid-century modern furniture as viable for mass production in the UK. After their partnership with Stag ended in the early 1960s, the Reids focused on architecture projects, though their furniture designs continue to define British mid-century modernism.
