A wonderfully distinctive mid century metamorphic cocktail cabinet, dating to approximately the 1950s or 1960s and retaining its original retailer’s label for Cox & Cox Ltd., The Furnishing Store of Burnham-on-Sea and Winscombe, Somerset.
At first glance, it appears to be a beautifully proportioned cabinet with clean architectural lines and richly figured veneers. Lift the slim brass handle on the top, however, and the cabinet cleverly transforms: the lid rises while the two figured front panels open outwards, revealing a fully fitted cocktail bar and generous serving area.
Inside, the curved glazed compartment features a glass shelf, mirrored panels and a striking black-and-gold striped base. Above is a practical wipe-clean preparation surface, providing plenty of room for mixing and serving drinks. The cabinet also comes complete with six original wonderfully playful green and yellow cocktail sticks, held in their fittings on either side of the interior.
A spacious double-door cupboard below provides additional storage for bottles, glasses and barware. Brass-toned handles, tapered legs and the beautifully matched grain across the front complete the design.
The original manufacturer is unknown, with Cox & Cox Ltd. believed to have been the retailer rather than the maker. An unusual and particularly well-equipped example, offering both a smart piece of mid century furniture and a brilliantly theatrical home bar.
