Arne Wahl Iversen was a Danish furniture designer whose work in the 1960s exemplified the quality and restraint of Scandinavian modernism. Working primarily with Komfort and Ikea of Sweden, he created pieces that balanced everyday functionality with careful attention to materials and construction.
His designs are most recognised for their use of rosewood - particularly Brazilian rosewood before trade restrictions - combined with teak or oak framework. Wahl Iversen favoured clean, horizontal lines and avoided unnecessary ornamentation, instead letting the natural grain patterns and warm tones of the timber provide visual interest. His sideboards and credenzas typically feature slim tapered legs, well-fitted drawers with quality joinery, and thoughtfully placed handles or finger pulls.
What sets Wahl Iversen's furniture apart is the construction quality. Dovetail joints, solid wood backs rather than cheap ply, and proper drawer runners show a commitment to durability that's increasingly rare. The pieces were designed to be used daily, not treated as precious objects - though the craftsmanship means they've held up remarkably well over sixty years.
His work represents mid-century Danish design at a practical price point. While not as widely collected as Wegner or Vodder, Wahl Iversen furniture offers the same design principles and build quality without the premium attached to bigger names. It's honest, well-made furniture from an era when that was simply the standard.

Arne Wahl Iversen was a distinguished Danish furniture designer whose elegant storage pieces and desks epitomized the refined craftsmanship of mid-century Scandinavian design. Iversen’s work is characterised by sculptural forms, exceptional joinery, and masterful use of teak and rosewood. His designs for manufacturers Komfort and Vinde Møbelfabrik showcased a sophisticated understanding of proportion and detail, creating pieces that balanced visual lightness with practical functionality. His bedroom furniture gained international acclaim when Prince Rainier and Grace Kelly commissioned a set after spotting it at the 1968 Geneva furniture fair, launching his work into the American mar
