An unusual vintage optician’s eye test light box with a bold black and white face that looks just as good switched off as it does illuminated.
The upper panel features a radial test chart with numbered lines and a striped central detail. Below are two smaller illuminated sections with rows of letters. Dials and switches sit on the side of the black case, adding to its original working character. All the lights and dials are working, and the box has a UK three-pin plug.
Light boxes like this were used in opticians’ consulting rooms during the mid twentieth century. The illuminated letters helped patients read the chart clearly during an eye test, while the fan of radiating lines was used to check for astigmatism. The letters on this example are reversed because the patient would have viewed them in a mirror, allowing the test to be carried out at the required viewing distance even in a smaller room.
There are hanging points at the back, so it would look brilliant mounted on a wall as an illuminated feature in a living room, hallway, studio or shop. The case shows visible wear to the finish, particularly around the controls, as you would expect from a piece that has been used.
A distinctive piece of vintage equipment with plenty of visual impact, whether you leave it lit or simply enjoy its graphic face.
