An exceptional Danish mid century coffee table designed by renowned architect and furniture designer Ole Wanscher and produced by Poul Jeppesens Møbelfabrik.
Executed in beautifully figured Brazilian rosewood, this is the rarer and far more sought-after rosewood variant, with incredible depth and movement running throughout the grain. The top displays rich dark tones alongside lighter streaks and dramatic figuring that shift beautifully depending on the light.
The design is classic Ole Wanscher - refined, restrained and quietly architectural. What really sets this piece apart is the distinctive "floating top" construction, where the tabletop appears to levitate above the frame. The subtle gap between the top and base gives the table an elegant lightness despite the richness of the rosewood, while the softly rounded edges and sculpted corner joints showcase the quality of Danish cabinetmaking of the period.
The long, low proportions make it an ideal centrepiece for a living room, pairing perfectly with Danish modern and mid century interiors. The slim tapered legs and clean silhouette allow the rosewood to do the talking.
Ole Wanscher is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in Danish furniture design, known for combining traditional craftsmanship with modernist simplicity. His work was heavily influenced by classical English furniture proportions, reinterpreted through the lens of Danish Modern design. Pieces produced by Poul Jeppesens Møbelfabrik are particularly respected for their build quality and craftsmanship.
The table retains its original Danish Furnituremakers Control badge – a mark associated with high standards of Danish manufacture and export quality during the mid century period.
Presented in very good vintage condition overall, with some light age-related wear and marks in keeping with age and use. The rosewood has a wonderful rich patina throughout.
A superb and increasingly difficult-to-find example of Danish rosewood furniture from one of the great names of Scandinavian design.

A student of Kaare Klint, Wanscher believed that good design should last for generations and his furniture reflects that philosophy with graceful proportions, subtle detailing and exceptional craftsmanship.
From his iconic floating coffee table to his sculptural seating for France & Søn, Wanscher drew on historical forms—Egyptian, English and 18th-century styles - reinterpreting them with Scandinavian restraint. His work remains highly sought-after for its quiet sophistication, enduring quality and timeless appeal.

Ole Wanscher was a key figure in Scandinavian design, particularly renowned for his timeless elegance and classic approach to modern furniture. Born in Denmark in 1903, he studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under Kaare Klint, inheriting a deep respect for historical furniture traditions while pioneering new modernist approaches.
Wanscher’s designs are characterised by their refined proportions, masterful joinery, and restrained use of ornamentation. He believed that good furniture should honor both historical craftsmanship and contemporary needs, creating pieces that balanced tradition with innovation. His work often features graceful curves, carefully considered ergonomics, and an appreciation for the natural beauty of fine woods, particularly rosewood and mahogany.
