A beautifully understated mid century walnut chest of drawers by British furniture maker Uniflex, designed by Peter Hayward as part of the company’s celebrated 'M Range'. Retaining its original Uniflex branding and factory label dated 28 January 1959, this is a particularly lovely early example of post-war British modernist furniture.
The chest has a clean, architectural profile, with the drawer fronts neatly recessed within a slim outer frame. Richly figured walnut runs across the top, sides and drawer fronts, while the warm timber is picked out beautifully by the original small brass handles - a simple detail that gives the piece a distinctly 1950s feel.
Storage is arranged as two smaller drawers across the top with two generously proportioned full-width drawers beneath. The graduated layout keeps the front beautifully balanced while providing useful storage for everything from clothing and linens to paperwork or household essentials.
The cabinet sits on a separate solid wood underframe with slender tapered legs, lifting the main body away from the floor and giving the piece a wonderfully light appearance. Its relatively compact proportions also make it especially versatile, working equally well as a bedroom chest, hallway piece or additional storage in a living space.
A superb example of Peter Hayward’s work for Uniflex, with beautifully restrained detailing and particularly attractive walnut throughout. In lovely vintage condition and retaining both its original Uniflex mark and dated manufacturer’s label.

Uniflex was a British furniture manufacturer, originally founded as L. Lazarus & Sons in East London in 1910 and rebranded to Uniflex around 1960. Known first for bedroom furniture, the company expanded into living and dining ranges, including modular storage units. Designers Peter Hayward and Gunther Hoffstead led Uniflex towards a distinctive modernist style - clean lines, sled legs, and handle-free fronts, typically in teak, walnut or rosewood. Peter Hayward was one of the key figures in British furniture design through the late 1950s and 60s, known for bringing a cleaner, more contemporary look to bedroom and living room pieces at a time when much of the market was still firmly rooted in traditional styling.
Before Uniflex, Hayward had already built a strong reputation designing for Vanson. When the family behind Uniflex (formerly L. Lazarus & Sons) decided to push their furniture in a more modern direction, they brought him on board. His first range for them was fairly safe, but successful enough that they returned to him in early 1958 for something bolder – and the result was the M Range, launched later that year.
The M Range went on to become one of Uniflex’s most successful lines, staying in production for several years with further pieces added around 1960. It’s instantly recognisable for its clean lines, sled legs, and handle-free fronts – a real step towards the modernist look that would go on to define so much mid-century furniture. Built using traditional cabinet-making methods of the time, pieces from this range have a weight and quality that’s hard to find in furniture made just a few years later.
