A beautiful mid century walnut chest of drawers from the highly regarded M Range, designed by Peter Hayward for Uniflex during the 1960s.
Elegant, understated and exceptionally well made, this piece perfectly captures the refined simplicity that made British mid century furniture so sought after. The richly figured walnut drawer fronts display striking grain patterns throughout, framed by warm teak-toned edging and raised on slender tapered legs that give the chest a wonderfully light appearance.
The layout offers a practical combination of storage, with two smaller drawers above three generous full-width drawers beneath. Finished with the range's distinctive brass pull handles, the design is clean and uncluttered, allowing the beauty of the timber to take centre stage.
Designed by Peter Hayward, the M Range is widely considered one of the finest furniture collections produced by Uniflex. Hayward’s thoughtful proportions, restrained detailing and focus on craftsmanship resulted in furniture that feels just as relevant today as it did when first introduced.
This chest has been carefully restored and is presented in lovely vintage condition. There is a small mark to the top surface, as shown in the photographs, but otherwise it displays beautifully with only the light signs of age and use you would expect from a well cared for piece of this era.
A superb example of British mid century design – equally suited to a bedroom, dressing room or living space.
Founded in the early twentieth century, Uniflex became one of Britain’s most respected furniture manufacturers, known for producing high-quality contemporary furniture that combined modern design with exceptional craftsmanship. Collaborations with leading designers, including Peter Hayward, helped establish the company as one of the defining names in British mid century furniture, with pieces that remain highly collectible today.
This piece has found its new home, but plenty of other one-of-a-kind finds await you. Discover similar pieces.
Uniflex was a British furniture manufacturer, originally founded as L. Lazarus & Sons in East London in 1910 and rebranded to Uniflex around 1960. Known first for bedroom furniture, the company expanded into living and dining ranges, including modular storage units. Designers Peter Hayward and Gunther Hoffstead led Uniflex towards a distinctive modernist style - clean lines, sled legs, and handle-free fronts, typically in teak, walnut or rosewood. Peter Hayward was one of the key figures in British furniture design through the late 1950s and 60s, known for bringing a cleaner, more contemporary look to bedroom and living room pieces at a time when much of the market was still firmly rooted in traditional styling.
Before Uniflex, Hayward had already built a strong reputation designing for Vanson. When the family behind Uniflex (formerly L. Lazarus & Sons) decided to push their furniture in a more modern direction, they brought him on board. His first range for them was fairly safe, but successful enough that they returned to him in early 1958 for something bolder – and the result was the M Range, launched later that year.
The M Range went on to become one of Uniflex’s most successful lines, staying in production for several years with further pieces added around 1960. It’s instantly recognisable for its clean lines, sled legs, and handle-free fronts – a real step towards the modernist look that would go on to define so much mid-century furniture. Built using traditional cabinet-making methods of the time, pieces from this range have a weight and quality that’s hard to find in furniture made just a few years later.
