Mid Century ‘Model 459’ Coffee Table by Ercol

The frame is beech throughout, using Ercol’s signature steam-bending techniques for the legs which splay outward in that distinctively elegant stance. The lower shelf is the classic stick-back magazine rack design – turned beech spindles set into a solid frame, providing practical storage that doesn’t interrupt the visual lightness of the piece. It’s this attention to both function and form that made Ercol furniture so successful in post-war British homes.
All the joints are rock solid. The legs are tight, the magazine rack is secure, and the top is properly fixed to the frame. The blue “Made in Ercol England” label on the underside is still intact and legible – a nice authentication detail that confirms this is genuine mid-century production rather than later manufacture.

The condition is genuinely lovely. The elm top has honest vintage character – you can see where the grain has darkened slightly over time – but the overall finish is rich and even with no major marks, water damage, or areas where the wood has dried out. The beech frame has maintained its warm golden colour beautifully. The magazine rack spindles are all present and undamaged, which isn’t always the case with these tables.

Dimensionally, the Model 459 works perfectly as a standard coffee table height. The proportions are spot-on – long enough to be useful, low enough to keep sightlines clear, and the magazine rack provides genuinely practical storage for books, magazines, or remotes without cluttering the top surface.

This design has remained in continuous production (with some modifications) because it simply works. The combination of beautiful materials, expert construction, and thoughtful design creates furniture that fits equally well in period homes and contemporary interiors. The warm elm and honey-toned beech bring natural warmth to any room, and the Windsor-inspired details give it enough character to be interesting without overwhelming other furniture.

This is a particularly nice example – well-preserved, properly cared for, and ready to use. The kind of condition that makes you confident this table will continue looking good for another few decades.
