Vintage Model 439 Writing Desk by Ercol c.1960

The frame is beech with those characteristic tapered legs and cross-stretcher bracing that Ercol used throughout the Windsor range. The stretchers are positioned exactly where they need to be for structural support without getting in the way of your legs when seated. The whole piece sits at a comfortable writing height and the compact footprint means it works in spaces where larger desks would overwhelm.

The “Made in Ercol England” blue label is present and intact to the rear – proper authentication of genuine mid-century production rather than later manufacture. These labels often wear off or get removed over decades of use, so finding one still attached and legible is a positive indicator of careful ownership.

Ercol Furniture was founded in 1920 by Lucian Ercolani in High Wycombe, the traditional centre of English furniture making. The company became known for applying traditional Windsor chair-making techniques – steam-bending solid timber, wedged mortise-and-tenon joints, hand-finishing – to mid-century modern design. Ercol’s Windsor range, introduced in the 1950s and produced through the 1960s-70s, used solid elm for tops and surfaces paired with beech frames, creating furniture that was both robust and visually warm.

The construction methods were rooted in craft rather than industrial efficiency. Steam-bending allowed curved forms without lamination, hand-finishing meant each piece received individual attention, and the use of solid timber throughout rather than veneered chipboard meant furniture that could be repaired, refinished, and passed down through generations. Ercol furniture from this period has outlasted most of its contemporaries precisely because it was built using techniques proven over centuries of Windsor chair production.

The Model 439 was part of Ercol’s bedroom and occasional furniture range, designed to complement their Windsor dining and seating. The compact proportions and raised gallery made it equally suitable as a writing desk, dressing table, or hall table. Original production examples carry the distinctive blue “Made in Ercol England” label, while later pieces used different label designs or stamps. Finding furniture in this condition with original labels intact is increasingly uncommon as pieces approach 65 years old.
