A beautiful mid century teak sideboard from Nathan Furniture's sought-after 'Citadel' range, dating from the 1960s.
This is a particularly lovely example, with a lovely rich teak colour and beautifully figured grain throughout. The proportions are spot on too - long and low with elegant tapered legs that give it a lighter feel despite its generous storage capacity.
The layout is both practical and versatile, with three central drawers flanked by cupboards on either side. The top drawer features a cutlery organiser which has been freshly relined, giving it a clean, smart finish and making it ready for everyday use. Behind each cupboard door is a fixed shelf, providing plenty of space for crockery, glassware, records, board games, or general household storage.

Nathan Furniture was founded in 1916 by Barnett Nathan, a Russian immigrant who established a furniture workshop on Hackney Road in East London. The company remained modest until 1952, when Barnett’s sons Jerrold and Clive joined the business and refined its design direction with a focus on dining room furniture. In 1963, Nathan made a strategic shift toward Scandinavian-inspired design, launching the Citadel range of simple, elegant teak furniture. This move proved commercially successful, followed by ranges including Corinthian (the top-of-the-line model), Corsican, Cortina, Tola, Circles, and Squares.
Nathan produced dining tables, sideboards, chairs, and bedroom furniture using high-quality solid woods including teak, walnut, acacia, and rosewood, with rosewood detailing on handles and brass hardware. The company was an early adopter of synthetic materials like plastic laminates and acrylic glass, integrating them alongside traditional timber. Nathan remained in production through subsequent decades and continues today as part of Sutcliffe Furniture, based in Leyburn, North Yorkshire.
