A rare and highly collectible piece of British design history, this Herbert Terry No. 1209 Anglepoise desk lamp dates from the late 1930s. Produced by Herbert Terry & Sons in Redditch, Worcestershire, the 1209 was one of the very first production models following George Carwardine’s groundbreaking Anglepoise invention.

This early model features the classic four-spring design, slim steel arms, and a domed metal shade, all supported by a square cast-iron base. The adjustable arms and shade offer complete flexibility – the key innovation that made the Anglepoise so iconic.

According to the official Anglepoise archive, this version is identified as the Model 1209 (1933–1968). In collector circles it is sometimes also referred to as the 1208, leading to occasional confusion in terminology – but both refer to this early square-base, four-spring design.

There is a little press button on and off switch on the top of the lamp shade.

The springs are in good condition with no rusting or disintegration – and hold in place nicely with no drift down or movement.

It’s in excellent vintage, working condition with original paintwork.  A nice clean vintage example.

Please note this is an original and not a reproduction, so please expect historical signs of wear/use consistent with age and use which add to it’s appeal.

Rewired with new bulb holder, black braided cable and new 3 pin UK plug.

Anglepoise is a British lighting company that is known for its iconic task lamps. The company was founded in 1932 by George Carwardine, an automotive engineer who was interested in finding a way to create a lamp that could be easily adjusted and held its position without slipping or toppling over.

Rare and highly collectible, this early Herbert Terry Anglepoise 1209 is more than just a desk lamp – it is a milestone in industrial design and a great example of British engineering, perfect for collectors and enthusiasts of early modernist interiors.

Anglepoise

Carwardine's solution was to use a unique system of springs and levers that allowed the lamp to be positioned and balanced in any direction. He patented the design in 1933, and the Anglepoise lamp was born.

The first Anglepoise lamp was called the Model 1208, and it was an instant success. The lamp's unique design and functionality quickly caught the attention of architects, engineers, and designers, and it soon became a fixture in offices, workshops, and homes around the world.

During World War II, Anglepoise lamps were used extensively in military and industrial settings, and the company was awarded the prestigious Queen's Award for innovation in 1969.

Over the years, Anglepoise has continued to innovate and expand its product line, introducing new models and variations on the classic design. Today, the company is still based in the UK and remains committed to creating high-quality, functional lighting solutions that are both stylish and practical.
