Herbert Terry & Sons was a British manufacturer best known for producing the iconic Anglepoise lamp, one of the most enduring designs in the history of British industrial lighting.
Founded in Redditch, Worcestershire, the company originally specialised in springs and precision engineering. Its expertise in spring technology proved instrumental in the development of the Anglepoise lamp, following a collaboration with engineer and inventor George Carwardine in the 1930s.
Carwardine’s ingenious spring-balanced mechanism allowed the lamp to be adjusted effortlessly and remain in position, combining practical functionality with a distinctive industrial aesthetic. Herbert Terry & Sons began manufacturing the original Anglepoise in 1934, followed by the celebrated Model 1227 in 1935.
Over the following decades, the company produced a range of Anglepoise designs, including the Model 75, introduced in 1968. These vintage lamps remain highly sought after for their exceptional engineering, timeless appearance and versatility, making them equally at home on a desk, bedside table or in a contemporary interior.
