Superb 1970s swivel armchair with that sculptural bucket seat design that defined Space Age furniture. The high wraparound back and deeply scooped seat create an enveloping profile that's both visually striking and surprisingly supportive - the continuous rolled edges and flowing form make this far more comfortable than you'd expect from what looks like a relatively compact chair.
The seat shell is moulded construction upholstered in black vinyl with visible stitching lines that follow the contours. Black vinyl was the practical choice for 1970s office and commercial interiors, and it's exactly why these chairs still work so well today - it goes with everything and develops character rather than looking worn.
The four-star chrome base is beautifully engineered. The satin finish has held up remarkably well, and the full 360-degree swivel mechanism operates as smoothly now as it did when this left the factory. There’s a stamped mark on the underside suggesting factory production rather than a one-off piece, though I haven’t definitively identified the manufacturer.
What makes this design so successful is how it balances form and function. The bucket shape isn’t just sculptural – it provides genuine lateral support and keeps you centered in the seat. The swivel base means it works equally well as a desk chair or occasional seating, and it can tuck neatly under a table when not in use. The height is standard, so it pairs well with desks or dining tables.
The vinyl upholstery shows honest vintage character – surface scuffs, light scratches, and areas where the finish has dulled slightly from use. The stitching is intact throughout, and the seat cushioning still provides proper support. The chrome base has minor surface marks but no significant corrosion. This is exactly what authentic 1970s furniture looks like – used but not abused, with the kind of patina that proves it’s the real thing.
This style of chair appeared across multiple manufacturers in the early 1970s because the bucket-on-swivel-base format genuinely worked. It was functional enough for offices, sculptural enough for reception areas, and compact enough for domestic settings. That versatility is exactly why these designs have remained relevant – they were well thought out from the start.
