This vintage mid-century armchair takes its design cues directly from Florence Knoll's iconic 1954 lounge chair - that restrained, architectural approach to seating that defined corporate modernism in post-war America. The geometric cube-like form, button-tufted back cushion, and clean steel frame are all characteristic of Knoll's philosophy: furniture as "meat and potatoes," functional pieces that work within a larger architectural space rather than demanding attention for themselves.
The black leather upholstery features classic button tufting on the back and seat cushion, creating subtle articulation without fuss, while the seat cushion maintains that firm, supportive profile these chairs are known for. The polished steel frame uses square-section tubing in Knoll's signature style, with straight legs that give the chair its characteristic low-profile stance. There's nothing unnecessary here - just proportion, geometry, and materials doing exactly what they should.
What makes this style endure is how it balances formality with comfort. These chairs work equally well in living rooms, studies, or professional spaces, and they sit alongside both vintage and contemporary furniture without competing. The combination of structured black leather and reflective chrome gives you that mid-century executive aesthetic that still reads as sophisticated decades later.
This piece remains in good vintage condition with very minor wear to the leather and chrome consistent with age and use.
About Florence Knoll’s Design Legacy
Florence Knoll (1917-2019) designed her lounge collection in 1954 while heading the Knoll Planning Unit. Trained as an architect under Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius, and Marcel Breuer, she approached furniture design with an architectural mindset – scaling down the rhythm and proportions of modernist buildings into humanized interiors. Her lounge chairs became defining pieces of mid-century corporate design, copied widely for their perfect balance of geometry and comfort.
