A beautifully crafted mid century walnut sideboard by British furniture maker Alfred Cox, dating to approximately the 1960s and retaining its original maker's badges.
The standout feature is the wonderfully figured walnut, with dramatic rippling grain running across the drawer fronts, cupboard doors, sides and generous top. The warm tones and richly patterned timber give the piece real depth, while the simple brass handles provide an elegant contrast without distracting from the wood itself.
To the left are four generously proportioned drawers, beautifully constructed with traditional dovetail joints and fitted with paired brass handles.
Alongside, a pair of cupboard doors opens to reveal a substantial fitted interior with a long shelf and divided lower storage, offering plenty of space for tableware, glassware, bottles or everyday living-room essentials.
Perhaps the most distinctive part is the sculptural underframe. The cabinet is raised on beautifully shaped tapering legs joined by sweeping curved stretchers, giving what is otherwise a substantial piece an unexpectedly light and elegant appearance.
The gently projecting top and lower edges frame the cabinet beautifully, while the exceptional walnut grain continues across the front to create a particularly striking and cohesive finish.
The sideboard retains both its original Alfred Cox ‘AC’ badge and the maker’s “Handcraft Quality Furniture” registered trade mark label, confirming its provenance.
A superb example of British mid century furniture, combining Alfred Cox’s characteristic quality of construction with exceptional timber, elegant proportions and a highly sculptural base.

Alfred Cox (Furniture) Ltd was founded in 1956 and became one of the better-known names in British mid-century furniture, with their pieces sold exclusively through Heal's of London. Working primarily in walnut and teak, the company produced bedroom and living room furniture that sat comfortably within the post-war modernist movement - clean proportions, quality materials, and solid construction that holds up well decades later.
Their association with Heal's placed them alongside some of the most well-regarded furniture of the period, and their pieces remain a reliable find for anyone looking for well-made British mid-century.
