Mid Century Afromosia Sideboard by Richard Hornby for Fyne Ladye

Out of stock

A beautifully crafted mid-century sideboard, designed by the renowned British furniture designer Richard Hornby for Fyne Ladye and retailed through Heals of London in the 1960s. Hornby was celebrated for his meticulous attention to detail and quality craftsmanship and this piece perfectly demonstrates his refined aesthetic.

Constructed in rich afromosia teak, the sideboard features a striking arrangement of central drawers flanked by two spacious cupboards. The drawers showcase Hornby’s signature ribbed fronts and superb dovetail joinery, with the top drawer newly lined and fitted as a dedicated cutlery drawer. Inside the cupboards you’ll find adjustable shelving, providing versatile storage for dining or living spaces.

The sideboard stands on elegant tapering legs, giving it a light and sophisticated profile. Its clean lines and functional layout make it a timeless example of mid-century British design, blending practicality with understated style.

The piece is in lovely vintage condition with a warm, even patina. The cutlery drawer has been newly lined for a fresh finish. There is some minor ink staining inside one of the drawers (see images for details), but this does not detract from its overall presentation or use.

Richard Hornby was a respected British designer active during the mid-20th century, best known for his finely crafted furniture made from afromosia and teak. Working with Fyne Ladye, a high-quality manufacturer based in the UK, Hornby created elegant yet practical designs that embodied the modernist spirit of the era. His work was retailed exclusively through Heals of London, one of Britain’s most influential furniture retailers, renowned for championing innovative designers and bringing contemporary style into post-war homes. Today, Hornby’s pieces are highly sought after for their craftsmanship, clean lines, and enduring mid-century appeal.

This sideboard would make a stunning addition to a dining room, living area, or hallway – ideal for those who appreciate quality British design and craftsmanship.
