A really good example of British mid century design, this teak sideboard by Frank Guille for Austinsuite has that clean, confident look that just works in pretty much any setting. The proportions are spot on - low, long, and raised on tapered legs - with a warm teak grain that runs consistently across the front.
The layout is practical without overcomplicating things. Three central drawers provide plenty of storage, with the top drawer fitted with a freshly lined cutlery divider. Either side, you’ve got cupboards with fixed internal shelving - ideal for larger items, books, or everyday bits you want tucked away. The sculpted solid wood handles are a standout detail, carved directly into the drawer fronts and doors, giving it that subtle but distinctive Austinsuite feel.
This is the kind of mid century sideboard that works just as well as a media unit in a living room as it does in a dining space or hallway. Plenty of surface space on top for a lamp, turntable, or a run of ceramics, with enough storage underneath to keep things practical.
Frank Guille was one of the key designers behind Austinsuite’s success during the 1950s and 60s. His work helped define British mid century furniture, taking clear influence from Scandinavian design but keeping a slightly more robust, practical feel. Austinsuite pieces are known for their thoughtful construction, clean lines, and distinctive integrated handles – all of which are present here.
Fully restored and in excellent overall condition. The drawers run smoothly, doors open and close as they should, and the structure is solid throughout. There is a small mark inside the bottom of the right-hand cupboard (shown in the photos), but otherwise it presents really well.

Frank Guille was a highly influential British furniture designer and educator whose elegant, functional designs helped define mid-century modern style in post-war Britain. Born in 1927, he studied at Beckenham School of Art under Robin Day and John Cole before serving in the Royal Navy, later training under furniture design pioneers Gordon Russell and Danish master Kaare Klint.
Guille’s design philosophy centered on function, utility, and simplicity, creating furniture that was visually refined yet deeply practical. His breakthrough work included redesigning Carl Jacobs’ iconic Jason chair for Kandya, replacing solid beech legs with sleek metal ones that became a hallmark of 1950s British modernism. His modular Trimma kitchen system for Kandya revolutionised domestic storage with its flexible, space-efficient approach inspired by progressive European design.
Beyond his commercial success with manufacturers including Kandya, Austinsuite, and Heals, Guille dedicated three decades to design education, rising to Head of Furniture Design at the Royal College of Art.
