Jentique hit that balance between actually functional and properly made that a lot of mid-century furniture misses. This one gives you a fall-front writing surface at 77cm high, two proper drawers for stationery and cupboard storage below that'll handle everything from box files to your laptop when you're not using it.
The fall-front mechanism uses solid brass stays - the metal supports that hold the writing surface horizontal when it's open. These are original and work smoothly with no drop or wobble. When you lower the front, you get access to the fitted interior: two small drawers with turned wooden knobs, vertical dividers for documents, and those little compartments that were meant for stamps and ink but now handle USB drives and charging cables.
Jentique’s construction is recognisable if you know what to look for. The drawer sides are dovetailed – proper through-dovetails, not the hidden joints you get with cheaper production methods. The carcass uses mortise and tenon joinery at the corners, and the teak is solid timber for the structural elements with book-matched veneers on the visible panels. The grain matching across the fall-front shows the care that went into the build.
Inside the drawers, you can see the secondary timber – looks like beech for the drawer sides and runners. This is standard for quality British furniture: use expensive teak where it shows, use cheaper hardwood where it doesn’t, but make sure everything is properly jointed and constructed to last. The drawer bases are solid timber set into grooves, not plywood panels tacked on.
The lock works and comes with a key. The cupboard section has a single fixed shelf inside.
Bureaus like this were designed when people actually used desks at home for correspondence, accounts, and paperwork. The fitted interior was meant to organise everything you needed within reach. These days it works just as well for a compact home office setup – the cupboard handles a printer or router, the drawers take actual paperwork, and the fall-front gives you a proper writing surface that disappears when you close it.
The tapered legs are a Jentique signature – they give the piece visual lift without sacrificing stability. The proportions are compact enough that this works in spaces where a full desk won’t fit, but substantial enough that it doesn’t read as apologetic about being there.
Professionally restored. Original hardware, hinges, and lock mechanism. Some age-appropriate wear to the writing surface inlay. Drawer runners smooth, all joints solid. Very good structural condition throughout.
This piece has found its new home, but plenty of other one-of-a-kind finds await you. Discover similar pieces.
Jentique was a British furniture manufacturer from the 1960s-70s, producing mid-range teak furniture with Danish-influenced styling.
Their sideboards and storage pieces feature clean lines, sliding doors, and solid construction. Good quality with dovetail drawers and teak veneers over solid frames. A more affordable alternative to G-Plan from the same era.
We stock Jentique sideboards and storage furniture, all properly restored and ready to use.
