This White & Newton sideboard does exactly what British mid-century furniture does well - clean lines, solid construction, proper storage that actually works. Made in England around 1960, when manufacturers like White & Newton were translating Scandinavian design principles into sturdy, practical furniture for the British market.
The drawer bank on the left shows the kind of joinery you want to see: dovetails at the corners, smoothly finished fronts, square handles cut from solid teak. The top drawer's been relined with new felt and is fitted with dividers - originally designed as a cutlery drawer, and it still does that job properly. The other two drawers run on their original runners, which still operate smoothly after sixty-plus years.
Two sliding doors on the right open to reveal fixed shelving with a distinctive slatted base – a design detail that adds visual interest when the doors are open. The same square teak pulls on the doors echo the drawer handles, keeping the design language consistent across the piece.
The whole unit sits on cylindrical legs connected by a simple apron that frames the base without adding unnecessary fuss. The teak has developed the warm, honeyed patina you get from decades of proper care – rich grain patterns across the top, depth in the colour that you don’t find in new wood.
