A striking example of British mid-century design, this orange Maclamp desk lamp was designed by Sir Terence Conran for Habitat in the 1970s. A true design classic, it embodies the clean lines and functionality that made Habitat a household name in modern interiors.
This original Maclamp features an orange adjustable spotlight shade mounted on an articulated arm with metal fittings, allowing the lamp to be easily angled for reading, working, or task lighting. The compact design makes it perfect for use on a desk, side table, or bedside, while its sculptural form adds a distinctive design statement to any room.
In excellent vintage condition, with only light age-related wear (please see images for details). The lamp has been rewired and is fitted with a new UK 3-pin plug.
This piece represents more than just lighting – it’s part of British design history. Habitat, founded by Terence and Caroline Conran in 1964, revolutionised how the British public furnished their homes, introducing affordable, modern European design to everyday interiors. The Maclamp remains one of Habitat’s most iconic creations, sought after by collectors and design enthusiasts alike.
A functional yet stylish statement desk lamp, ideal for mid-century interiors, contemporary homes, or anyone looking to add a touch of authentic 1970s design heritage.
Habitat
Conran’s vision was to combine practicality with clean, contemporary design, drawing inspiration from European aesthetics, particularly Scandinavian minimalism. Habitat became synonymous with innovative pieces like the iconic Chicken Brick and flat-pack furniture, which were not only stylish but also accessible to a wide audience. Its stores were designed to inspire, with displays that mimicked real living spaces, a novel concept at the time.
By the 1970s and 80s, Habitat expanded internationally, introducing British consumers to global influences, from Japanese ceramics to French cookware. The brand was instrumental in democratising design, making what was once considered high-end and exclusive available to the everyday consumer.
Though the brand faced challenges and ownership changes over the decades, Habitat’s legacy endures as a pioneer of modern living in Britain. Today, it continues to blend timeless design principles with contemporary trends, holding its place as a beloved institution in British furniture history.
